Diamondbacks One Step Away From Securing Millions for Chase Field Renovations
The Arizona Diamondbacks are on the verge of securing up to $500 million for the renovation of their home, Chase Field, located in downtown Phoenix. The Arizona House of Representatives approved the key measure, Bill 2704, by a margin of 35-20 on Monday. This project seeks to recover sales taxes generated by the stadium and adjacent buildings over the next 30 years. These funds will be reinvested in the infrastructure of the retractable-roof structure, which has been home to the D-backs since 1998 and is owned by the Maricopa County Stadium District. The next step is the signature of Governor Katie Hobbs, who has publicly shown her support for the project. The Diamondbacks also plan to contribute $250 million to finance the renovations. Team president Derrick Hall has pointed out that the stadium, almost 30 years old, needs several improvements, especially in its air conditioning system, crucial during the hot summer months in Phoenix. The current equipment lease with the county expires in 2027.I am delighted that the legislature has approved a bill that will keep the Diamondbacks in Phoenix and create well-paying jobs. This is a great victory for all Arizonans. I thank the bipartisan elected officials and business and labor leaders who came together and worked with my office to make this moment possible.
Governor Katie Hobbs
We are ecstatic about the legislative approval of HB2704. This will be a monumental victory for baseball and Diamondbacks fans when Governor Katie Hobbs signs it. Then we could focus our attention on a proper lease extension negotiation with the Maricopa County Board of Supervisors in the hope of modernizing and renovating this public asset to the level those fans deserve.
