Liam Delap revealed that Cole Palmer influenced his decision to join Chelsea this summer. The 22-year-old striker, who also sparked interest from clubs like Manchester United, Nottingham Forest and Newcastle United, ultimately opted for Stamford Bridge, finalizing a transfer for 30 million pounds sterling earlier this month. Delap and Palmer shared a youth team at Manchester City, where they won the Premier League 2 title in the 2020-21 season. The forward revealed that he consulted his former teammate to make his decision.

Liam Delap and Cole Palmer played on the same youth team at Manchester City.

“Yes, I spoke with him a bit,” Delap commented. “I asked him what I needed to ask him. He told me what I needed to know. I don’t like too much information. Ultimately, it was my decision, so I wanted to have a clear mind. I’ve known him since I was 15, playing at City with him. I have a good relationship with him, so it was nice to see a familiar face”.

Delap also mentioned other important factors in his decision: A good relationship with the coach. Palmer joined Chelsea in the summer of 2023 and has become one of the most prominent figures in the Premier League. Delap hopes to follow in his footsteps.

“Of course, that’s the goal,” he stated. “I think we both had similar positions and he’s done incredibly well, so I hope I can do the same. He’s always been very good and everyone at City will tell you that. The speed at which he’s achieved it is incredible. But I think, ultimately, it was always going to happen.”

Delap also confirmed that the team change altered his summer plans, as he initially aimed to participate in the European Under-21 Championship with England.

“I had my sights set on the Euros all season and was looking forward to participating,” said Delap.

Chelsea coach Enzo Maresca has suggested that Delap could be the future number 9 for England, and when asked if he had spoken with the senior national team coach, Thomas Tuchel, Delap replied:

“I think, obviously, being at a club like this is going to help. If I play badly, I know I won’t be here, but if I play well, it will give me a good opportunity”.
