Madrid, Spain – Spanish tennis player Carlos Alcaraz has confirmed his withdrawal from the Mutua Madrid Open 2026 due to a right wrist injury, preventing him from competing at the highest level. This decision comes after not recovering from the discomfort that forced him to withdraw from the Barcelona Open Banc Sabadell. It will be the second consecutive time that Alcaraz is absent from the Madrid tournament.
The world number two expressed his disappointment through his social media. Alcaraz’s withdrawal is added to that of the Serbian Novak Djokovic, who also withdrew from the tournament due to physical problems, which represents a significant loss for the event. Alcaraz raised alarms during his debut in Barcelona, where he required medical assistance. Although it was initially thought to be a minor issue, the player admitted that the injury was “more serious than expected”. The Mutua Madrid Open will be held from April 20 to May 3 at the Caja Mágica. The participation of the main figures of the circuit is expected. It is still unknown if the number one in the world, Jannik Sinner, will participate, as he could be managing his calendar for the upcoming tournaments in Rome and Roland Garros. The current champions of the tournament are Norwegian Casper Ruud and Belarusian Aryna Sabalenka.Madrid is home and it hurts a lot not to be able to play here, especially for my people
