Fundora vs. Thurman: Analysis and Predictions for Saturday’s Fight
Sebastian Fundora and Keith Thurman will face each other this Saturday at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, in a fight that promises strong emotions. Fundora will put his WBC super welterweight title on the line against an experienced Thurman, who seeks to return to the top of boxing. Fundora, with a record of 23-1-1 and 15 KOs, won the belt after defeating Tim Tszyu in March 2024. Since then, he has successfully defended his title twice, including a technical knockout victory in the seventh round against Tszyu in their rematch. Fundora’s wingspan, at 6’5″ and an 80-inch reach, presents a unique challenge for any opponent. Despite his ability to fight at a distance, the southpaw feels comfortable at close range, where he uses his volume of punches and body punishment to wear down his rivals. Fundora starts as the favorite with a -380 odds, according to DraftKings Sportsbook. Thurman (31-1, 23 KOs), former unified welterweight champion, has had little activity since his split-decision loss to Manny Pacquiao in September 2019. Since then, he has only fought twice, most recently in March 2025, when he moved up to super welterweight and defeated Brock Jarvis in three rounds. Thurman’s experience could be a key factor. At his best, he faced the best in the welterweight division. His footwork will be crucial to avoid Fundora’s reach. Thurman possesses power in both hands, and his right hand could be one of his main weapons. Will Fundora be able to use his size, youth, and body punishment to wear down Thurman? Or will Thurman, with a +280 share, use his experience and power to surprise Fundora?
Shawn Porter, Danny Garcia, and Raul Marquez, former champions, analyze the fight and offer their predictions.
How does Thurman win?
Thurman can win in multiple ways. He should use his movement and go to the body when he’s close. Pivot, block, or whatever it takes to prevent Fundora from connecting punches. He can wear down Fundora and force him to give up his height. Thurman can box and move his way to victory. Thurman can win by knockout. It doesn’t have to be the one-punch knockout that Brian Mendoza used to beat Fundora, although we know Thurman has that power. If he had it at 147, he has more power at 154 and should probably fight at 160. The athleticism sets up his power, and that power can knock out Fundora. How does Fundora win?
Fundora cannot afford to keep the fight on the outside and box all night. He has to force the fight at close range and be defensively responsible after throwing his hands. He must get close and wear down Thurman as he has done with other opponents. If he doesn’t wear him down, the fight is up in the air. This is, ultimately, the fight that Fundora must lose.Who wins?
I always support the B side, so I think Thurman wins by knockout.
The Confrontation
Thurman is 37 years old. I remember when I fought for the middleweight title against Arthur Abraham, I was 37. Abraham was a monster, and I wasn’t the same. I think Fundora is that monster for Thurman right now. Thurman has also been inactive. He has a lot of experience fighting against the best fighters like Manny Pacquiao, Danny Garcia, Shawn Porter, Robert Guerrero, Luis Collazo, and Julio Díaz. But I don’t see him winning this fight. At 37 years old, when you fight a guy like Fundora, who I think has improved and is at his best, I just don’t see Thurman having the power he used to have when he was younger, mainly due to inactivity. How does Fundora win?
He just has to be himself, use his height and reach. He has to control the distance from the start, figure out Thurman and use the jab. Go to the inside and make Thurman work and then wear him down. Use body shots and uppercuts coming in while maintaining a fast pace. He’s fighting an older guy who likes to fight at his own pace, so don’t let him do that. Fundora has very good defense, so he will have to be prepared for the things Thurman might be preparing due to his experience. How does Thurman win?
Connect “a” punch, get close. And that’s something he can do, because Fundora also likes to fight up close. I know Thurman has been working on using his distance. Thurman is fast, but I think Fundora is ready for that. He has improved since the fight with Brian Mendoza; he learned a lot from that defeat. He has matured and is very disciplined. The only way Thurman can win is if Fundora makes a mistake and gets careless. Thurman is a fighter who moves in and out. But he won’t have the legs to do it for 12 rounds against a fighter like Fundora, who comes at him. I think Thurman will hold to keep him active. He will have to stand and face him at some point, and that won’t be his fight because his legs won’t be there. The only thing he could do is connect a big punch using his experience and choosing his moments. Go in and catch him from a different angle. He could catch him at long range too, but it has to be the right punch: the right cross or the left hook. He has the power to knock him down, but that’s the only way. He’s not going to outbox Fundora.Who wins?
Fundora by stoppage in the final rounds. I think the corner will stop it. I don’t think Thurman can last, especially at his age. The further the fight goes, the harder it will be for him.Danny Garcia, former super lightweight and welterweight championHow does Fundora win?
Use his youth, apply intelligent pressure, and keep Thurman at the end of his punches. Fundora should try to wear down the inactive Thurman. If he does this, I can see him winning by a late TKO.How does Thurman win?
Take advantage of his experience. Use quick footwork, smart and tight defense, frustrate Fundora and try to connect wide and hard punches. If he does that, he can score a KO in the final rounds as Mendoza did against Fundora.Who wins?
I don’t see this fight going the distance. Thurman by KO.
