Jonquel Jones Suffers New Ankle Injury

New York Liberty’s center, Jonquel Jones, suffered a re-injury to her right ankle during the second quarter of Thursday night’s game against the Phoenix Mercury, resulting in an 89-81 loss. Jones was unable to return to the game after the injury. The injury occurred when Jones was attempting a layup and fell on the foot of Mercury guard Sami Whitcomb. She showed obvious pain when falling to the ground and had to be helped off the court, missing 8:35 to finish the first half. Initially, Jones appeared to be grabbing his right knee, but the team subsequently ruled him out for the rest of the match due to the ankle injury. This is the second time that 31-year-old Jones has injured her ankle. The first time was on June 5, in the victory against the Washington Mystics, which forced her to miss two games. She returned on Tuesday night, scoring 10 points and grabbing 10 rebounds in the victory over the Atlanta Dream. Jones, who was the league’s Most Valuable Player in 2021 and the Finals MVP in 2024, is currently second in the WNBA in rebounds, averaging 10.3 per game. In addition, she averages 13.4 points and 2.6 assists for the current champions, the Liberty.
