Canada advances to the quarterfinals of the 2026 World Baseball Classic after defeating Cuba
In a demonstration of power on the diamond, Canada secured its place in the quarterfinals of the 2026 World Baseball Classic by defeating Cuba with a score of 7-2. The match, which took place at the Hiram Bithorn Stadium in San Juan, Puerto Rico, also gave Canada first place in Group A.
This triumph marks a milestone for the Canadian national team, who for the first time in their history advance to this phase of the tournament, consolidating their performance with a 3-1 record.
The solid performance of pitcher Cal Quantrill was key to the Canadian victory. In five innings of work, Quantrill only allowed one unearned run and two hits, in addition to striking out five batters and issuing a walk.
The Canadian offense didn’t fall behind, taking the lead in the third inning with a sacrifice fly from Owen Caissie and extending their lead in the fifth inning thanks to a solo home run by Abraham Toro.
Although Cuba managed to score a run in the fifth inning, Canada responded with a three-run rally in the sixth. Bo Naylor drove in a run with a double, while Otto López drove in two more with a single, establishing a score of 5-1.
Cuba tried to react in the seventh inning with a run-producing hit by Ariel Martinez, but Josh Naylor responded with an unstoppable RBI single in the eighth, maintaining the Canadian lead.
In the ninth inning, Caissie stood out again, extending the lead and sealing Canada’s definitive 7-2 victory.
With this result, Cuba says goodbye to the tournament in the group stage with a 2-2 record, after having reached the semifinals in the previous edition of the World Baseball Classic. Canada, for its part, awaits its next rival in the quarterfinals, which will come out of Group B.
