Athletics Roster Moves: Urshela Returns, Brown to Injured List
The Athletics activated third baseman Gio Urshela from the 10-day injured list before Tuesday night’s game against the Houston Astros.
Urshela had been out of action due to a strain in his left hamstring, an injury suffered during the 10-5 defeat to the Angels on May 22.
In a corresponding move, the Athletics placed outfielder Seth Brown (elbow) on the 10-day injured list, retroactive to June 13.
Urshela is not in the starting lineup for Tuesday against Houston. Max Muncy will take the third baseman position.
Urshela, 33, is batting .224 with 13 RBIs in 32 games this season, his first with the Athletics. This is the eighth Major League team he has played for.
In general, Urshela has a career batting average of .271, with 73 home runs and 345 RBIs in 824 games. His best season was in 2019, when he set career highs with a .314 average, 21 home runs, and 74 RBIs in 132 games.
Brown, 32, is batting .185 with one home run and three RBIs in 38 games this season.
Brown debuted in the majors in 2019 with the A’s and has 74 home runs and 233 RBIs, along with a .226 average in 568 games. In 2021 he hit 20 home runs and had his career bests with 25 home runs and 73 RBIs in 2022.
In addition, Athletics second baseman Zack Gelof will begin a rehabilitation assignment with Triple-A Las Vegas on Tuesday. Gelof, 25, fractured his right hand during spring training and then suffered a stress reaction in his ribs during a rehabilitation assignment in early May.
Gelof batted .211 with 17 home runs and 49 RBIs in 138 games for the A’s in 2024. He struck out 188 times, the most in the American League.
