Thailand Prepares for Formula 1: Bangkok in Sight for 2028
The Thai cabinet has given the green light to a proposal to host a Formula 1 street race in Bangkok, with the possibility of it being held as early as 2028. This was announced by official sources on Tuesday.
Jirayu Houngsub, government spokesperson, reported in a press conference that the initial proposal contemplates the organization of five events between 2028 and 2032. “In the next two or three years, Thailand will have a world-class competition, something we never thought would actually happen in Thailand,” Jirayu stated.
Tourism Minister Sorawong Thienthong added that the estimated investment for this initiative is around $1.23 billion.La carrera de Bangkok se desarrollaría en un circuito cercano al Parque Chatuchak. The proposed circuit would be a 3.54-mile street circuit, located between Krung Thep Aphiwat Central Station and Chatuchak Park, north of the city center.
Thai Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra attended the Monaco Grand Prix last month, in one of several meetings with F1 CEO Stefano Domenicali, to discuss the proposal.
Formula 1 announced a 24-race calendar for 2026 last week, with the addition of the Madrid Grand Prix, which will replace the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix in Imola.
Several existing race contracts are scheduled to expire before Thailand’s proposed entry in 2028, with the Dutch Grand Prix possibly leaving the calendar after its 2026 event and Barcelona with little chance of keeping its place now that Madrid has been added.
The Belgian Grand Prix at Spa-Francorchamps will become a biennial event from 2027, meaning it will not be held in 2028 and 2030 before its contract expires in 2031.
On Tuesday, F1 announced that the Canadian Grand Prix in Montreal extended its contract until 2035, while Miami has the longest agreement with the sport, valid until 2041.
