Sinner Downplays Start to Season After Doha Defeat

Jannik Sinner, currently number 2 in the world, has expressed his tranquility despite his recent defeat against Jakub Mensik in the Doha tournament. The Italian tennis player, who was looking to emulate his rival Carlos Alcaraz, failed to advance to the semifinals of the Qatar Open. Mensik, 20 years old, defeated Sinner with a score of 7-6 (3), 2-6, 6-3, in a match where the young Czech player displayed an outstanding game. Sinner, on the other hand, made unexpected errors, especially with his forehand. This defeat adds to the one suffered in the Australian Open semifinals against Novak Djokovic. This was the first time Sinner, 24, had lost a complete match on hard court against a player outside the top 10 since October 2023. Furthermore, he had not reached the final in consecutive events since the summer of 2024.

“He served very well, so it was difficult to break,” Sinner commented. “It was a difficult break in the third, a couple of mistakes. Obviously, it can happen, but at the same time, I am a little disappointed with how I handled those moments.

“All players go through ups and downs. I’ve had two incredible years. Having a small slump is not something that will worry me. I know I can play a little better tennis”.

Sinner is now preparing for the “Sunshine Double” of Indian Wells and Miami next month, where he will seek to reduce the point difference with Alcaraz in the ranking.
