Cousins, Ex-NBA, Suspended and Fired in Puerto Rico After Altercation with Fans

San Juan, Puerto Rico – DeMarcus Cousins, former NBA star player, has been suspended for the rest of the season of the Baloncesto Superior Nacional (BSN) and his contract with the Mets de Guaynabo has been terminated. The decision was made after an incident with fans during a game this week. The altercation, which resulted in Cousins’ ejection from Monday night’s game, involved an obscene gesture, an exchange of words, and physical contact with a fan in the front row. In addition, a discussion with another spectator was reported while he was heading to the locker room, with liquids being thrown from the stands.

As a result of his actions, the league has imposed a fine of $4,250, with the possibility of an additional sanction of $5,750.

We strongly condemn any form of violence or provocation, both on and off the court. The conduct exhibited by Mr. Cousins does not represent the values or identity of the Mets de Guaynabo, and we completely disassociate ourselves from his actions.

This was Cousins’ second season in Puerto Rico, where he averaged 18.2 points and nine rebounds per game. In the 2023 season, he was a key player for the Mets to reach the tournament semifinals. With a distinguished NBA career, where he averaged 19.6 points and 10.2 rebounds in 11 seasons, Cousins was selected to the All-Star Game four times. His best performance was in the 2016-17 season with the Sacramento Kings, averaging 27.8 points per game. After his time in the NBA, he also played in professional leagues in Taiwan and Mongolia. The BSN has not yet confirmed whether there will be an additional suspension affecting the player’s future participation in the league.
