Sandy Brondello to Coach Toronto Tempo
Coach Sandy Brondello has accepted the head coaching position for the Toronto Tempo, the WNBA expansion team, as Alofoke Deportes has been able to confirm.
The official announcement is expected to be made in the coming days, once the contract is finalized.
Brondello received great interest from several organizations before deciding on Toronto, which will begin competing in 2026 along with another expansion team, the Portland Fire.
The Tempo will play their games at the Coca Cola Coliseum in Toronto, in addition to playing two regular season games in Montreal and two in Vancouver.
Brondello has a distinguished career in the league, being selected for the All-Star as a player in 1999 and leading the Phoenix Mercury and New York Liberty to WNBA titles as a coach in 2014 and 2024, respectively. Her contract with the Liberty was not renewed after their elimination in the first round of playoffs last season.
Brondello also coaches the Australian national team, the Opals, whom he recently led to the bronze medal at the 2024 Paris Olympics.
With the hiring of Brondello, the only head coaching positions left to fill are those of the Dallas Wings, Seattle Storm, and New York Liberty.
