Las Vegas Aces Crowned WNBA Champions for the Third Time in Four Years

In a dominant display, the Las Vegas Aces defeated the Phoenix Mercury with a score of 97-86, securing their third WNBA championship in four years. This triumph solidifies their position as the reigning dynasty in the league. The Aces completed a four-game sweep against the Mercury in the WNBA Finals, the first in league history in a seven-game format. A’ja Wilson, the Aces superstar and four-time league MVP, led the way in Game 4, finishing with 31 points, 9 rebounds, 4 assists, and 3 blocks, earning her the Finals MVP award. In the Finals, she averaged 28.5 points, 11.8 rebounds, and 2 blocks.

She is alone on Everest.

Becky Hammon, coach of the Aces
Wilson, with a touch of humor, brought a pink tambourine to the post-match press conference, using it to emphasize his answers. Hammon, who played in the WNBA from 1999 to 2014, considers the Aces one of the league’s greatest franchises.

The skill level of these players, for me, is not comparable. It’s a natural evolution. That’s the sign of any great league; it doesn’t stay the same.

The Aces’ season was not an easy road. After a 53-point defeat, the team achieved a 16-game winning streak that secured them the second seed in the playoffs. They overcame challenging series before dominating the Finals.

I love being their coach. I love being their friend. Sometimes I push them a little, but I am invested in their greatness.

During the first two and a half months of the season, the Aces failed to come together, but they managed to overcome adversity.

We had confidence in ourselves. I am very proud of how we stayed the course and trusted the process the whole time.

The Aces overcame a difficult start to dominate the Finals. “This hit is different because it was different,” said coach Becky Hammon. The Mercury came to the Finals with momentum, but the Aces neutralized it. Las Vegas won a close Game 1, dominated in Game 2, and secured Game 3 with a game-winning basket by Wilson in the last second. In Game 4, the Aces were never behind, leading by 16 points at halftime and 14 entering the final quarter. Phoenix coach Nate Tibbetts was ejected in the third quarter. Despite the Mercury’s comeback in the final quarter, the Aces maintained their lead and celebrated their third title. Gray and Jackie Young each scored 18 points, combining for 12 assists. Jewell Loyd and Dana Evans contributed 22 points off the bench.

I ended up in the promised land.

The Aces, with Wilson and Young, both former No. 1 draft picks, at the peak of their careers, have the potential to join a select group of teams with four WNBA titles. The WNBA’s 2026 free agency and collective bargaining agreement negotiations will be key to the league’s future. Aces owner Mark Davis preferred not to comment on the collective bargaining negotiations. Off-court issues in the league generated boos for commissioner Cathy Engelbert. Gray commented on this, saying that the players should be treated with the respect they deserve. While the WNBA faces labor and free agency challenges, the Aces can reflect on their successful season.

Good things happen to the right people.
