Significant Losses for the Indiana Fever: Colson and McDonald Out for the Season

The Indiana Fever team faces a setback after announcing that players Sydney Colson and Aari McDonald will not be able to continue in the 2025 season due to injuries. The news comes after Thursday’s loss to the Phoenix Mercury, a game that marked the end of both players’ participation in the current season.

Colson suffered a torn anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) in his left knee during the first quarter of the game. McDonald, for his part, suffered a fracture in a bone in his right foot in the last quarter of the match.

The team was already dealing with the absence of star Caitlin Clark, who has only been able to participate in 13 games this summer due to quadriceps and groin injuries. Clark hasn’t played since July 15th and there is still no date for her return.

For the next Saturday’s game against the Chicago Sky, the Fever will have only nine players available and no natural point guards. According to league rules, they will not be able to add an emergency player until after the game. After the match with Chicago, the team will host the Dallas Wings on Tuesday.

Colson, who arrived at the Fever as a free agent, brought experience and leadership on the court. In the season, she averaged 2.4 points, 2.0 assists, and 0.5 steals in 13.5 minutes per game.

McDonald was initially hired to fill in for Clark, and signed a contract for the rest of the season at the end of June. In 20 games, McDonald averaged 9.8 points, 4.7 assists and 1.3 steals, starting in 13 of them.

The Fever, who currently have a 17-14 record and are in fifth place in the standings, had achieved a five-game winning streak before suffering two consecutive losses against Los Angeles and Phoenix, the latter being the most lopsided of the season.
