Emma Meesseman Returns to the WNBA and Strengthens the Liberty
The outstanding basketball player, Emma Meesseman, has decided to return to the WNBA and will join the New York Liberty for the last two months of the season. The news has generated great expectation in the world of women’s basketball.
Meesseman, who was the Finals MVP in 2019, hadn’t played in the league since 2022. Recently, she obtained her visa and joined the team in Connecticut for the game against the Sun.
I know there are people here… New York is a great city. It’s easy to reach. We’ll see how I feel. We want to win. I think everyone knows in the W that you never know who’s going to win. It’s impossible to pick. It’s a gamble. I’m the type of person or player who just wants to be at home because I like being at home. I like being around good people.
The athlete also considered joining Minnesota or Phoenix before making her final decision.
Although Meesseman prepared for Friday’s game, coach Sandy Brondello indicated that she would only play in case of an emergency. Ultimately, she did not participate in the 78-62 loss to the Sun.
Meesseman has closely followed the growth of the WNBA while competing with Belgium in the FIBA World Cup and the Olympics.
Changed. She wanted to try again and see with all these fans following the new players, the young players. I love basketball, so I was trying to play as much as I could.
After helping Belgium qualify for the World Cup in Germany, Meesseman decided to return to the league.
Meesseman’s arrival is a great boost for the team, especially considering the absence of Breanna Stewart due to a knee injury. In addition, Nyara Sabally and Kennedy Burke are also out with injuries.
Meesseman and Stewart are 6-foot-4-inch tall players.
Despite having played with Stewart, Jonquel Jones, and Natasha Cloud, Meesseman commented that she was not influenced by anyone in her decision.
Meesseman, two-time All-Star, and Cloud helped the Mystics win the title in 2019. Her last team in the WNBA was the Chicago Sky.
Despite Stewart’s absence, the Liberty have a talented group led by Sabrina Ionescu, Jones, Cloud, and Leonie Fiebich.
During her time away from the WNBA, Meesseman has excelled in international basketball, being named EuroBasket MVP twice. In addition, she helped Belgium reach the medal round at the Paris Olympics.
To make room for Meesseman, the Liberty cut Jaylyn Sherrod.
The Liberty’s general manager, Jonathan Kolb, praised Sherrod, highlighting his perseverance and fighting spirit.
