Cunningham, Indiana Fever star, criticizes WNBA expansion cities

Indiana Fever star Sophie Cunningham has expressed her opinion on the cities that will join the WNBA as part of the league’s expansion. Cunningham’s critical comments arose after commissioner Cathy Engelbert announced the incorporation of Cleveland, Detroit, and Philadelphia in 2028, 2029, and 2030, respectively.

“You also want to listen to your players. Where do they want to play? Where will they be excited to play and attract fans?”

The player expressed her doubts about the excitement that Detroit and Cleveland would generate. The expansion will increase the total number of WNBA teams to 18. Commissioner Engelbert highlighted the high demand for franchises in the WNBA. Currently, the WNBA has 13 teams. Toronto and Portland will join the league in 2026.
