Wimbledon Upsets: Tiafoe and Brooksby Eliminated
In an emotional day at Wimbledon, the American Frances Tiafoe, seeded number 12, suffered an unexpected defeat against the British Cameron Norrie in the second round. The match, which lasted four sets, ended with scores of 4-6, 6-4, 6-3 and 7-5 in favor of Norrie. This elimination marks the fourth time in seven Grand Slam tournaments since 2024 that Tiafoe fails to advance past the second round. Tiafoe started off well, winning the first set. However, Norrie, who had never beaten a top 20 player at Wimbledon, showed great energy and dominated the game from the second set onwards, while Tiafoe seemed to lose steam.Despite a seven-minute break to go to the bathroom before the fourth set, Tiafoe couldn’t stop Norrie, who achieved a crucial break to take a 4-3 lead. Although Tiafoe responded, Norrie maintained the pressure and secured the victory.
Another American, Jenson Brooksby, was also eliminated, falling to the young Brazilian Joao Fonseca, 18, with a score of 6-4, 5-7, 6-2 and 6-4. Fonseca, the youngest player in the tournament, became the youngest man to reach the third round of Wimbledon since Bernard Tomic in 2011, and the second Brazilian to achieve this in the last 20 years. In addition, Chilean Nicolás Jarry advanced to the next round after defeating American Learner Tien with a score of 6-2, 6-2 and 6-3. American Brandon Nakashima, seeded number 29, completed his first-round match with a victory over Yunchaokete Bu, with scores of 6-4, 4-6, 7-6 (1) and 6-4.
