Tiafoe and Shapovalov Surprise at the Japan Open
In a day full of surprises at the Japan Open, Frances Tiafoe and Denis Shapovalov suffered unexpected defeats in the first round of the tournament.
Tiafoe, eighth seed, couldn’t maintain his level and fell to qualifier Marton Fucsovics. The American, visibly frustrated, smashed his racket after the defeat.
Fucsovics won with partials of 3-6, 6-1 and 7-5, taking advantage of Tiafoe’s difficulties with his serve.
This defeat marks the fourth consecutive for Tiafoe, who is currently ranked number 29.
In the next round, Fucsovics will face the winner of the match between Jordan Thompson and Brandon Nakashima.
For his part, Shapovalov, seeded number seven, was also eliminated after losing 7-5 and 6-3 against Daniel Altmaier.
Altmaier will advance to play against the winner of the match between Damir Dzumhur and Aleksandar Vukic.
