In an exciting day of the Davis Cup, Spain achieved a spectacular comeback to secure their place in the semifinals, defeating the Czech Republic with a score of 2-1.

Granollers and Martínez, Heroes of the Spanish Comeback

The duo formed by Marcel Granollers and Pedro Martínez Portero was the key to the Spanish triumph, defeating Tomas Machac and Jakub Mensik in the decisive doubles match. This triumph takes on even more value considering the absence of Carlos Alcaraz, who could not participate due to an injury. The Spanish team, which hadn’t reached the semi-finals since their victory in 2019, will now face Germany, who previously defeated Argentina with the same score of 2-1. Granollers and Martinez secured their spot in the semifinals by winning the doubles with scores of 7-6 (8) and 7-6 (8) at the SuperTennis Arena.

On the road to victory, 20-year-old Jakub Mensik stood out with 20 aces, securing the first point for the Czech Republic by defeating Pablo Carreño Busta with a score of 7-5 and 6-4. However, Jaume Munar leveled the series for Spain, achieving his first individual victory in the Davis Cup against Jiri Lehecka, with a result of 6-3 and 6-4.

“I had a lot of faith in my tennis. It doesn’t matter who is in front. I had a lot of confidence in myself and that’s the main thing,” Munar stated.

On the other hand, Germany secured their place in the semi-finals after a close match against Argentina. Tomas Martin Etcheverry put Argentina ahead, but Alexander Zverev tied for Germany, setting the stage for the decisive doubles match. In the doubles match, Kevin Krawietz and Tim Puetz secured a crucial victory for Germany, ensuring their place in the semifinals with a score of 4-6, 6-4, and 7-6 (10), after an exciting encounter where both teams squandered opportunities to close out the match. In the other semi-final, Italy, seeking their third consecutive title and the fourth overall, will face Belgium. The Italians will not have Jannik Sinner, who is resting. This edition of the Davis Cup, held in Bologna, marks the sixth edition of the renewed event that crowns a champion in a neutral venue.
