In an exciting day of the Davis Cup, Spain achieved a spectacular comeback to secure their place in the semifinals, defeating the Czech Republic with a score of 2-1. The duo composed of Marcel Granollers and Pedro Martínez Portero was key in the victory, overcoming Tomas Machac and Jakub Mensik in the decisive doubles match.
The absence of Carlos Alcaraz, who withdrew from the Spanish team due to an injury, was not an impediment for Spain to demonstrate their worth on the court. Granollers and Martínez took the lead and guided their team to victory.
The last time Spain reached the semifinals was in 2019, the year they won their sixth Davis Cup title. Now, they will face Germany, who defeated Argentina with the same score of 2-1.
In the doubles match that defined the encounter between Germany and Argentina, Kevin Krawietz and Tim Puetz achieved a close victory over Andrés Molteni and Horacio Zeballos, securing Germany’s pass to the next phase.
The doubles match between Granollers and Martínez was decided with scores of 7-6 (8) and 7-6 (8) at the SuperTennis Arena, sealing the Spanish victory.
Jakub Mensik, with 20 aces, had put the Czech Republic ahead by defeating Pablo Carreño Busta. However, Jaume Munar tied the series for Spain, defeating Jiri Lehecka.
“I had a lot of confidence in my tennis. No matter who is in front, I had a lot of confidence in myself and that’s the main thing,” declared Munar.
In the other quarter-final match, Tomas Martin Etcheverry gave Argentina the lead by defeating Jan-Lennard Struff. Alexander Zverev tied the score for Germany by defeating Francisco Cerundolo.
In the doubles match, Krawietz and Puetz came back to win 4-6, 6-4, 7-6 (10), in a match full of excitement.
Italy, seeking its third consecutive title, will face Belgium in the other semi-final. The Italians will not have Jannik Sinner, who is resting.
The Davis Cup in Bologna is the sixth edition of the renewed event that crowns a champion in a neutral venue.
