Australian tennis player Nick Kyrgios has confirmed that he will not participate in the singles event at the upcoming Australian Open. Kyrgios, known for his charisma and support from the local public, was considered to receive one of the three remaining wildcards from Tennis Australia. However, through his social media, he announced that he will only play doubles alongside his friend Thanasi Kokkinakis at Melbourne Park, where the tournament will begin on January 18. The multiple surgeries on the wrist and knee have limited Kyrgios to only seven singles matches in the last three years, causing his ranking to fall to 670.

Kyrgios’ most recent singles match, at 30 years old, lasted only 66 minutes, a 6-3, 6-4 defeat to American Aleksandar Kovacevic at the Brisbane International earlier this week. Kyrgios, who reached the Wimbledon final in 2022, stated that his body is not yet ready for five-set tennis and prefers that the invitation be granted to someone who can “take advantage of their moment”.

“After some good conversations with TA, I have decided to focus on doubles for this year’s Australian Open. I am fit and back on the court, but five-set matches are another thing, and I am not yet ready to go all the way”.

“This tournament means everything to me, but I prefer to give my place to someone who is ready to seize their moment. They are all building blocks, and I will return next year and be eager to compete”.

The 40-year-old former champion Stan Wawrinka seems almost certain to get one of the wild cards. Wawrinka has already announced that this year will be his last season on the circuit, which will give fans in Melbourne the opportunity to say goodbye to the 2014 Australian Open winner. Wawrinka showed that he still has a lot of fight in him with a brave three-set victory over the world number 27, Arthur Rinderknech, at the United Cup last weekend. Jordan Thompson, whose 2025 season was affected by injuries, leading him to fall to 113th in the world, and fellow Australian Chris O’Connell (114) would also be worthy of receiving invitations.
