Italy Crowned Davis Cup Champion Without Sinner

Italy continues to demonstrate its dominance in the Davis Cup, securing its fourth title without the need for its star, Jannik Sinner. Matteo Berrettini and Flavio Cobolli led the way for the Italians, winning their singles matches and securing an insurmountable 2-0 lead over Spain in Sunday’s final. This triumph marks Italy’s fourth Davis Cup title, and the third consecutive. The last nation to achieve three titles in a row was the United States, which won five consecutive titles between 1968 and 1972. Sinner, world number two and a key player in Italy’s recent successes, chose not to participate this week, preferring to focus on preparation for the upcoming season. Lorenzo Musetti, ranked number 8, was also not present. Despite these absences, Italy demonstrated its strength, winning its three matches of the week 2-0 at the SuperTennis Arena in Bologna, after eliminating Austria in the quarterfinals and Belgium in the semifinals. Spain was also deprived of its main figure, Carlos Alcaraz, world number one. In Sunday’s final, Berrettini defeated Pablo Carreño Busta with a score of 6-3, 6-4. Subsequently, Cobolli came back to defeat Jaume Munar 1-6, 7-6 (5), 7-5, securing the decisive point, as he did on all three occasions this week. Cobolli reacted by dropping his racket to the ground and was lifted by his Italian teammates. Italy won the Davis Cup for the first time in 1976, followed by victories in Malaga in 2023 and 2024. This is the first time they have won at home. Spain, six-time champion, was playing the final for the first time since 2019.
