Coco Gauff Returns with Victory in Montreal, Despite Double Faults
American tennis player Coco Gauff began her participation in the Montreal tournament with a victory, although the match was marked by difficulties in her serve. Gauff defeated her compatriot Danielle Collins in a second-round match that extended to three sets. The final score was 7-5, 4-6, and 7-6 (2), demonstrating Gauff’s tenacity in the face of challenges. The young tennis player, who hadn’t competed since her first-round defeat at Wimbledon, had to deal with a total of 23 double faults throughout the match. Gauff implemented a change in her service grip during her break time, but this generated difficulties in the match. Her serves, at times, were long or weak, which allowed Collins to take advantage. The inconsistency in Gauff’s service had already been a problem in the past, including her title defense at the US Open the previous year, where she committed 19 double faults in a fourth-round match. Despite these issues, Gauff managed to close out the match with a decisive ace. Currently, Gauff is the top seed in Montreal, due to the absence of Aryna Sabalenka, whom she defeated to win the French Open in June. In the third round, Gauff will face Veronika Kudermetova. The tennis player commented that she still has energy to continue competing, despite the match lasting two hours and 55 minutes. In addition, she stated that she could cut the game time in half if she manages to improve her serve. It was a frustrating match for me. I felt like I was practicing well and I don’t think I transferred it today, but I hope I’ve gotten my bad match of the tournament out of the way and can come back stronger in the next round.

I felt like I was playing well, except for that part of my game. But I felt like from the baseline I was playing pretty well.
