Leylah Fernandez Crowned Champion at the Japan Open

Tennis player Leylah Fernandez won the title at the WTA Japan Open, after defeating the young promise Tereza Valentova in an exciting final.

Fernandez, who faced the 18-year-old qualifier, Valentova, managed to prevail with partial scores of 6-0, 5-7 and 6-3, thus securing her fifth title in her professional career.

In her eighth final, the 2021 US Open runner-up demonstrated her prowess from the start, dominating the first set in just 29 minutes. Valentova, however, reacted in the second set, managing to level the match after breaking Fernandez’s serve in the twelfth game.

In the decisive set, Fernandez, currently ranked number 27, secured a crucial break in the fourth game. Despite the Czech player’s resistance, the Canadian managed to maintain her lead and secure her second title of the season, adding this victory to the one obtained at the WTA 500 D.C. Open in July.
