Roger Federer Enters the International Tennis Hall of Fame
In an announcement that doesn’t surprise tennis fans, Roger Federer has been chosen to enter the International Tennis Hall of Fame in his first year of eligibility. The news was confirmed this Wednesday by the institution based in Rhode Island. Federer, known for his elegant game and impact on the sport, was the only candidate in the player category who received the necessary support for the Class of 2026. The Hall of Fame does not reveal the voting results. The induction ceremony is scheduled for August.
Federer, with eight titles at Wimbledon, six at the Australian Open, five at the US Open, and one at Roland Garros, is one of the eight men who have managed to win all four Grand Slam tournaments.I have always valued the history of tennis and the example set by those who came before me. Being recognized in this way by the sport and by my peers is deeply moving.

The first Grand Slam title for Federer came at the All England Club in 2003. In 2009, he surpassed Pete Sampras’ record of 14 major titles by winning Wimbledon, defeating Andy Roddick. His twentieth Grand Slam came at the 2018 Australian Open.I didn’t predict I would have so many majors. I expected to have maybe one, to be honest, at the beginning of my career.

His Grand Slam achievements were surpassed by Rafael Nadal, who reached 22 before retiring at age 38, and Novak Djokovic, who has 24 and is still active at 38. With a formidable forehand and serve, an aggressive playing style, and footwork that made everything seem effortless, Federer won 103 tournaments and 1,251 singles matches, totals surpassed in men’s tennis only by Jimmy Connors in the Open era, which began in 1968. Federer finished five years at number 1 in the ATP ranking, spent a record 237 consecutive weeks and a total of 310 at the top, led Switzerland to the 2014 Davis Cup title and partnered with Stan Wawrinka to win a gold medal in doubles at the 2008 Olympic Games. Federer, a tennis ambassador who often answered questions in English, French, and Swiss German at press conferences, played his last match at Wimbledon in 2021, a month before turning 40. His retirement announcement came the following year; he said goodbye by playing doubles alongside Nadal at the Laver Cup, an event founded by Federer’s management company. Federer established himself as a role model for younger athletes like Carlos Alcaraz, the current number 1, who holds six Grand Slam trophies.I don’t really feel like I’m playing for records. I play this game because I love it.

At the height of his career, Federer reached a record of 10 consecutive Grand Slam finals from 2005 to 2007, winning eight. That dominance extended to appearing in 18 of 19 Grand Slam finals; he also accumulated streaks of 23 semifinals and 36 quarterfinals in major tournaments. Djokovic has described those results as “results that didn’t seem human”. Mary Carillo, television commentator and journalist, was also chosen in the contributor category. She was the first woman to regularly comment on tennis broadcasts and was a correspondent for HBO’s “Real Sports.” She won six Emmy Awards and three Peabody Awards and was inducted into the Sports Broadcasting Hall of Fame in 2018.The elegance he has shown on the court, off the court, how he treated people, everyone; a truly humble guy: everything he does, he does with elegance. I appreciate that. He took the game to another level… That’s what I admire most.
Carlos Alcaraz
I’ve had the privilege of spending my career sharing the stories of this magnificent game, and if I’ve opened any doors along the way, it will make this August day even more meaningful.
