Errani and Vavassori Conquer US Open Mixed Doubles: A Triumph for the Specialists
In a renewed edition of the US Open, Sara Errani and Andrea Vavassori proved their worth by becoming mixed doubles champions, defeating Iga Swiatek and Casper Ruud in an exciting final.
The Italian pair, initially hesitant about their participation, prevailed with a score of 6-3, 5-7 (10-6) on a memorable night, securing a prize of one million dollars. This triumph stands out in a tournament that prioritized individual stars, sidelining doubles specialists.
“I think it was important for us to play,” Vavassori stated. “This initiative showed that doubles can be spectacular. The stadium was full and the people enjoyed it. Today we showed that it works.”

Errani and Vavassori’s victory not only gives them the title, but also makes them the first champions to repeat at Flushing Meadows since Bethanie Mattek-Sands and Jamie Murray in 2018-19.
The event, which attracted figures like Carlos Alcaraz, Emma Raducanu, Novak Djokovic, Naomi Osaka, and Daniil Medvedev, demonstrated the appeal of doubles tennis, despite initial criticisms of the format.
Errani and Vavassori, who received a special invitation, represented the doubles players who did not have the same opportunity to compete.
In the semifinals, Errani and Vavassori defeated Christian Harrison and Danielle Collins, while Swiatek and Ruud overcame Jessica Pegula and Jack Draper.
Errani, a prominent doubles player, underscored the importance of strategy and experience in this modality, along with Vavassori who, with his net play, complicated matters for his opponents.
Swiatek and Ruud, finalists, shared $400,000.
