Grigor Dimitrov Withdraws from US Open Due to Injury
Tennis player Grigor Dimitrov, a semifinalist in three Grand Slam tournaments, has withdrawn from the US Open this Tuesday. This decision comes just over a month after suffering a chest muscle injury that forced him to abandon his match against Jannik Sinner at Wimbledon.
Dimitrov’s retirement at the All England Club on July 7, where he had won the first two sets against Sinner before getting injured in the third, marked his fifth consecutive time in a Grand Slam tournament that he failed to complete a match. Similar situations occurred at the Australian Open in January and at Roland Garros in May, in addition to Wimbledon and the US Open last year.
In last year’s US Open, Dimitrov retired in the quarterfinals when he was losing 6-3, 6-7 (5), 6-3, 4-1 against Frances Tiafoe.
Dimitrov reached the semi-finals of the US Open in 2019, the Australian Open in 2017 and Wimbledon in 2014.
His highest ranking was number 3 in the world; he is currently ranked number 21.
With Dimitrov’s withdrawal, Alejandro Tabilo gets a place in the men’s singles draw, which will begin on August 24.
Brandon Holt is the next player who would enter the draw if another tennis player withdraws. Holt surprised Taylor Fritz at Flushing Meadows in 2022 and his mother is two-time US Open champion Tracy Austin.
