Italy Advances to Davis Cup Semifinals After Defeating Austria

BOLOGNA, Italy – Flavio Cobolli secured the victory for Italy over Austria, with a score of 6-1, 6-3, thus sealing the pass to the Davis Cup semifinals. This triumph, which culminated in an overall score of 2-0, places Italy, the defending two-time champion, in the next phase where it will face Belgium. Cobolli, with a dominant game, closed the match with a winning serve after 65 minutes of play, unleashing joy among the home crowd. The semi-final is scheduled for Friday. Italy maintains an impressive streak of 12 consecutive victories in the Davis Cup, since their last defeat in the group stage of the 2023 final, against Canada. Previously, Matteo Berrettini also contributed to the Italian success, overcoming Jurij Rodionov with a score of 6-3, 7-6 (4). Berrettini demonstrated his tenacity by coming back from 2-5 in the second set, achieving a break in the ninth game and saving three set points before securing the victory in the tiebreak. Since the tiebreaker is defined as the best of three matches, the doubles match was not necessary. Italy, currently at the top of the ranking, seeks its third consecutive title and the fourth overall. Jannik Sinner, who led Italy to victory in 2023 and 2024, decided not to participate in this season’s Davis Cup final. Austria, ranked number 12, has only managed to beat Italy once in their six previous encounters, in the 1990 quarter-finals in Vienna, their best result in this team competition. The final phase of the Davis Cup in Bologna represents the sixth edition of the renewed event, where the champion is defined in a neutral venue. Carlos Alcaraz, world number one and recent runner-up after facing Sinner at the ATP Finals in Turin on Sunday, withdrew due to a hamstring injury. Spain will face the Czech Republic, seeded number 4, and Germany, number 2, will play against Argentina in the last two quarter-finals on Thursday.
