Alcaraz Headlines “One Point Slam” at Australian Open

The Spanish tennis player Carlos Alcaraz will lead the new “One Point Slam” event at the upcoming Australian Open. This was announced by the organizers this Tuesday, marking an initiative that will pit 10 amateur players against 22 professionals. The overall winner of the tournament will receive a prize of one million Australian dollars (700,000 US dollars). This amount is slightly less than what the semi-finalists will receive in the men’s and women’s categories of the main tournament. This event, which will be held during the Grand Slam’s opening weekend, follows the US Open’s attempt to attract new audiences to tennis, expanding its mixed doubles competition. The “One Point Slam” will be played as its name indicates: each match will consist of a single point. A prior game of “rock, paper, scissors” will decide who serves.

“I can reveal today that world number 1, Carlos Alcaraz, will headline the lineup of professional players at the Million Dollar 1 Point Slam, an exciting new initiative where one point could win you $1 million,” said Australian Open tournament director Craig Tiley.

“Whether you’re an amateur or a professional, the final winner will take home the prize. Entries will open soon at clubs across the country, and during opening week, finalists will compete for the chance to face the professionals at Rod Laver Arena,” added Tiley. “With more big names to be announced soon, now you have a million reasons to grab a racket and get ready for January.”
