Seismic risk in the Dominican Republic: Are we really prepared? Given the recent wave of earthquakes worldwide, the Dominican Republic remains on high alert regarding its own tectonic vulnerability. Although international seismic activity does not predict a local event, experts such as geologist Osiris de León warn that the true threat lies in the response capacity to a possible earthquake. The current debate transcends the magnitude of seismic movements and focuses on the fragility of our infrastructure. Specialists emphasize that structural safety depends on critical factors such as the quality of materials, the type of soil, and strict compliance with building codes. Densely populated areas, such as Greater Santo Domingo and Santiago, face particular challenges due to the amplification of seismic waves in certain terrains, which requires rigorous seismic microzonation. The lesson left by countries affected during 2026, such as Venezuela and the Philippines, is clear: the damage depends less on the force of the earthquake and more on institutional and citizen preparedness. Faced with a permanent geological threat, the national priority must be the review of essential buildings—hospitals, schools, and homes—and strengthening a culture of prevention. The question is not when the next major earthquake will occur, but how resilient the country will be when the earth moves again.
