Tottenham Responds on the Pitch After Losing Eze

After a week marked by frustration at not securing the signing of Eberechi Eze, Tottenham Hotspur sent a clear message with their 2-0 victory over Manchester City: the success of a season does not only depend on signings. In a short time, coach Thomas Frank has proven his worth, leading the team to nearly victory against Paris Saint-Germain in the UEFA Super Cup and starting the Premier League with a resounding 3-0 victory over Burnley. However, the week was marked by Eze’s decision to join Arsenal. The fans, who traveled to the match against City, expressed their frustration with chants against president Daniel Levy, but the atmosphere changed radically in the first half, when Tottenham went ahead 2-0. A controlled and disciplined performance in the second half secured the score and, for a few hours, the Spurs led the Premier League.

I am extremely proud of the players’ performance, an exceptionally good performance.

Thomas Frank
Frank, when asked about the loss of Eze, stated that he doesn’t want players who don’t want to join the club. He could find more willingness in the transfer market after the clinical exhibition against City.

For 35 minutes, Tottenham withstood the pressure, with goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario making a crucial save. The last 10 minutes of the first half were key in the coach’s strategy. A long pass exposed City’s defensive line, allowing Richarlison to assist Brennan Johnson for the first goal, after VAR review. High pressure in the rival area forced an error from goalkeeper James Trafford, which was taken advantage of by João Palhinha to score the second goal. Frank, winner at the Etihad with Brentford in 2022, chose a team that included Palhinha and Mohammed Kudus, but above all, he is making the most of the players he inherited. The way Spurs closed out the match, limiting City’s opportunities, contrasts with the previous approach. Frank is rebuilding a team that, despite its triumph in the UEFA Europa League, finished in 17th place last season. There will be challenges, but for now, the path is promising.

In the second half we were very good. The clean sheet makes me very happy. It’s something we’ve been working on a lot.

City coach Pep Guardiola has lost eight Premier League matches against Tottenham, his highest number against a rival. Guardiola’s team has problems to solve, especially in defense and in goal, where the young Trafford made a mistake that cost the second goal. Guardiola did not guarantee who will play against Brighton & Hove Albion next week, but he expects improvements at the Amex Stadium. A victory against Bournemouth before the transfer market closes would be further proof that Frank’s first season won’t be decided solely in the market.
