A Copa Conmebol Sudamericana match between Independiente and Universidad de Chile was canceled due to violent clashes between fans. The Libertadores de América stadium in Avellaneda, Argentina, was evacuated on Wednesday night following incidents that left at least 10 fans with serious injuries and nearly 90 arrested, according to local authorities.

The round of 16 match of the 2025 Conmebol Sudamericana between Independiente (ARG) and Universidad de Chile (CHI) has been canceled.

The decision was made because the local club and local authorities were unable to provide adequate security to ensure the continuation of the match.

Violence erupted in the stands when fans of the University of Chile threw projectiles and broken seats at Independiente supporters. In shocking scenes, several Independiente fans moved to the area where the visiting fans were located, attacking them with stones and sticks before the police arrived. Fans from both teams were seen asking for medical assistance. At the time of the suspension, the score was tied 1-1. Lucas Assadi had scored for Universidad de Chile in the 11th minute, and Santiago Montiel had equalized for Independiente in the 27th minute. The aggregate score favored the Chilean team 2-1.
