Diego Simeone Explains His Anfield Dismissal

Atlético de Madrid coach Diego Simeone gave statements after his expulsion in the Champions League match against Liverpool at Anfield, where his team was defeated 3-2. Simeone was sent to the showers in stoppage time, after Virgil van Dijk scored the winning goal for the home side. The Argentinian coach appeared to be involved in an argument with Liverpool supporters on the sidelines, which led to his expulsion by the referee. In the post-match press conference, Simeone addressed what happened:

Let’s talk about what concerns me. We are in a place where we have no right to respond or react, right? It’s never good when we react as coaches, right?

Simeone continued explaining his point of view.

The coach of Atlético de Madrid also said:

We are the people on the stage and we need to behave well. But if there are comments against racism or insults, we can also get angry and fight back, the coaches, from where we are, for how they insult us throughout the game. When they scored the third goal, he turned around and insulted me, when I turned around, I am a person and I am human.

Simeone added:

I am not going to go into the exact nature of the insults. I don’t want to get involved in that, I don’t want that discussion. I have to stay in my place. I know what happened behind the coach’s bench. I can’t solve society’s problems in a press conference. I have to live with that because it exists everywhere all the time.
