Vicente Sánchez Celebrates Cruz Azul’s Triumph and Leaves His Future Open

Cruz Azul’s technical director, Vicente Sánchez, celebrated the resounding 5-0 victory over the Vancouver Whitecaps, which secured them the title of the 2025 Concacaf Champions Cup. However, the coach left his continuity at the helm of the Liga MX club up in the air.

Sánchez took over as interim coach of Cruz Azul in February 2025, during the Clausura tournament of the Liga MX, following the surprising departure of Martín Anselmi to join FC Porto. Under his direction, the team achieved a meritorious third place in the Liga MX table, accumulating 33 points and a record of 9-6-2 (wins-draws-losses), before reaching the tournament semifinals and winning the CCC trophy.

“The value comes from the numbers; it was a semester where the numbers speak for themselves. I value myself a lot because God put me there. I am grateful because the fans chanted my name, and they do it because they feel represented on the field,” Sánchez declared after the CONCACAF Champions Cup final.

The coach also highlighted the difficulties the team faced and his gratitude to the club president, Víctor Velázquez, for the opportunity given.

“I don’t know the future, I live day by day and I don’t know what will happen tomorrow. The decision doesn’t depend on me. There are many very good things. When we took the team we had one point, we were 16, we barely had a break, it was Tuesday and Saturday. We played in both tournaments, we were the team that played the most games in the entire semester. We reached the semifinals and undefeated in Concacaf.”

Sánchez expressed his gratitude to Velázquez for trusting him, and emphasized the importance of the title obtained.

“I thank Velázquez for putting his trust in me and we responded with this title. Today Cruz Azul is at the top of the tournament. Very happy, after a semester of a lot of work. Returning the work to the person who trusted me is the best thing that can happen to you. Today we gave the title to Cruz Azul and it is the best thing that can happen to you. I live for today. Very happy.”

Despite the uncertainty about his future, the team captain, Ignacio Rivero, assured the players’ support for Sánchez.

“It means a lot, for everyone, not just for Vicente, who today is a coach who can stay with us or not. It’s not up to me to decide, but well, we are very happy with him and well, time will tell.”

Lorenzo Faravelli, Cruz Azul player, joined the feeling of his teammates: “We defended Vicente on the field, and then, if this happens or not tomorrow, it no longer depends on us.”

Cruz Azul won the Concacaf Champions Cup for the seventh time in its history, tying with América as the team with the most titles in the competition. Although it is a historic achievement for the club, this is the first time Cruz Azul has won the title since the 2013-14 season.
