Sampdoria Relegated to Serie C: Historic Sadness for the Italian Giant

1 Min Read

Sampdoria, former Serie A champion and European Cup finalist, has been relegated to the third division of Italian football for the first time in its 78-year history.

The team sealed its fate after a goalless draw against Juve Stabia on Tuesday.

Sampdoria won their only top-flight title in 1991, during a golden era for the club, led by the “Goals Twins”, Gianluca Vialli and Roberto Mancini, who terrorized Italian defenses.

However, the team has not won a trophy since the 1994 Coppa Italia.

After being relegated from Serie A in 2023, they will play in Serie C next season, after failing to qualify for the relegation play-offs.

Sampdoria’s season began with Andrea Pirlo, 2006 world champion, as coach. However, a series of changes in the coaching staff led to the appointment of Alberico Evani, former AC Milan midfielder, in April, in a desperate effort to avoid relegation, but he failed to keep the team in the category.
