Cristian Romero, New Tottenham Hotspur Captain

Following Son Heung-Min’s departure, coach Thomas Frank has appointed Cristian Romero as the new captain of Tottenham Hotspur. Romero, a renowned central defender, assumes this important role after the exit of Son, who led the team for the last two seasons. Son Heung-Min, who wore the armband for two seasons, left the team to join LAFC, forcing Frank to look for a new leader. Romero, world champion and two-time Copa América winner, was already the team’s vice-captain, alongside James Maddison, during Ange Postecoglou’s period.

“I had a good conversation with Cuti Romero, and he is going to be our captain. He felt very honored and happy about it. It’s a big thing to lead this wonderful club on the field, not only for this Super Cup, but also throughout the season,” Frank declared.

Romero is Tottenham’s third captain in the last decade, preceded by Hugo Lloris, who held the position for eight years, from 2015 to 2023.

Frank highlighted Romero’s qualities as a leader, both on and off the field. In addition, the coach plans to establish a leadership group composed of several key players, to ensure effective team management. Romero, who arrived at Tottenham in 2021 from Atalanta of Serie A, has played 100 matches in the top category of English football. He was the captain in the 1-0 victory over Manchester United in the Europa League final and also led the team in the semi-finals and quarter-finals. The Danish coach will announce the rest of Tottenham’s leadership group after the close of the transfer market.
