Real Madrid and other clubs seek a Club World Cup every two years

Real Madrid, along with other clubs from Europe and South America, is in favor of holding the renewed Club World Cup every two years, with the aim of increasing their revenue. However, FIFA considers this proposal unfeasible, according to sources close to the matter. Although an official request has not been made at this time, sources indicate that during the recent tournament in the United States, executives from several major clubs discussed this possibility with FIFA representatives. FIFA is satisfied with the outcome of the new tournament, but currently considers a new Club World Cup in just two years to be “unfeasible” and is preparing for the next edition in 2029.

FIFA distributed one billion dollars among the participating teams in the recent Club World Cup, and sources believe that it is not feasible to generate that amount every two years. Real Madrid, which reached the semi-finals, took home $82.5 million, while Chelsea generated $114.6 million as champions. Furthermore, sources indicated that FIFA believes that holding the Club World Cup every two years would imply a conflict with UEFA that is not in its interest, and they also see it as very difficult to fit this possibility into the already demanding current football calendar. The source also revealed that Qatar could be one of the candidate countries to host this tournament.

Qatar already hosted the 2022 FIFA World Cup and has the funding and infrastructure necessary to host the event. However, the calendar works against it, as it would have to be held in December due to the heat. The then-Real Madrid coach, Carlo Ancelotti, initially stated that the club would not participate in the renewed Club World Cup. The president of LaLiga, Javier Tebas, has been an outspoken critic of the revamped FIFA Club World Cup.
