Fernández has played in five matches with Barcelona’s first team this season, but, according to sources, he felt that leaving the club where he arrived as a child was the best thing for his career. The expectation at Barcelona was that he would renew his contract after turning 18 this week, which would have allowed them to increase his release clause.
Other clubs, such as Borussia Dortmund, had also shown a strong interest in signing Fernández. Teams from all over Europe, especially from Germany and England, have been following the talented offensive midfielder for years, including Bayern Munich, Manchester City and Chelsea, among others.
However, the former Barcelona coach, Luis Enrique, with whom Fernández spoke on the phone, convinced him to join the Ligue 1 team.
The PSG was looking for new signings in midfield and considers Fernández an excellent option, given his talent and low release clause.
This is the second time, after Xavi Simons in 2019, that the Parisians have managed to attract a talent trained at La Masia.
