Postecoglou in charge: Nottingham Forest signs former Tottenham coach

Nottingham Forest has announced Ange Postecoglou as their new manager, as confirmed by the club this Tuesday. Postecoglou arrives to replace Nuno Espírito Santo, who was dismissed by Forest on Monday. Sources indicate that Postecoglou has signed a contract that extends until June 2027. This is Postecoglou’s first job since he was fired by Tottenham Hotspur in June. During his two-season stay at Spurs, Postecoglou managed to win the UEFA Europa League in May, the club’s first trophy in 17 years. Postecoglou will manage Forest in their next match against Arsenal on Saturday at the Emirates Stadium.

Nuno’s departure from Forest was sudden, occurring only three matches after the start of the new season. Last season, Nuno led Forest to seventh place in the Premier League, qualifying for European football for the first time since 1996. The club was promoted to the Europa League after Crystal Palace’s disqualification from the UEFA Conference League due to multi-club ownership (MCO) rules. Sources reported that Nuno had disagreements with Edu Gaspar, Forest’s global head of football, and his relationship with owner Evangelos Marinakis became tense despite having signed a new three-year contract in June. The uncertainty about Nuno’s future became evident when he stated that he “wasn’t close” to Marinakis, and that their “relationship had changed”.

“Where there’s smoke, there’s fire, so I know how things work, but I’m here to do my job,” Nuno said at the time.

For Postecoglou, this position marks the end of a three-month break from football. During his two seasons with the Spurs, he led them to fifth place in the Premier League in 2023-24, before finishing in 17th place last season. That disappointment was offset by their successful European participation, where they won the Europa League, defeating Manchester United 1-0 in the final. However, 16 days after that triumph in Bilbao, Postecoglou was fired. Postecoglou brings a wealth of experience to Forest, having coached in Australia before managing the Socceroos from 2013 to 2017. Then he trained in Japan, managing Yokohama F. Marinos, before moving to Celtic, where he enjoyed a successful two-season period from 2021 to 2023. Subsequently, he arrived at Tottenham and now swaps North London for the City Ground.
