Nagbe, MLS legend and former USMNT, announces his retirement from football

Columbus Crew midfielder and former US national team player Darlington Nagbe announced his retirement after the Major League Soccer playoffs. The announcement was made by the team on Tuesday. At 35 years old, Nagbe has won four league titles in his 15 seasons in MLS, with Portland (2015), Atlanta (2018) and Columbus (2020, 2023). He has been Crew captain since 2020.

“After years of incredible memories, I will end my career at the end of this season,” Nagbe expressed on social media. “I am more than grateful to my family, all my teammates, coaches, teams, staff members, supporters and friends who have helped me on this journey.”

Darlington NagbeNagbe also expressed his gratitude towards Portland, Atlanta, and Columbus, highlighting the special moments experienced in each stage of his career. With 444 regular season appearances in MLS, Nagbe ranks fifth all-time, behind only Nick Rimando (514), Kyle Beckerman (498), Dax McCarty (488), and Kei Kamara (463). In his career, Nagbe scored nine regular season goals for Portland (2011-17), Atlanta (2018-19) and Columbus (2020-25), as well as two goals in the playoffs.
Darlington Nagbe will retire at the end of the Columbus Crew's season.
Nagbe also represented the United States national team in 25 international matches, scoring a goal in a friendly against Ecuador in 2016. Born in Liberia, Nagbe moved to the United States with his family when he was 5 months old. He played for Akron and won the Hermann Trophy in 2010 as the best men’s college soccer player. Columbus already secured their spot in the MLS postseason before their last regular season match.
