Musiala: “Nobody is to blame” after the serious injury

Bayern Munich midfielder Jamal Musiala has stated that there are no culprits for the fibula fracture suffered during the Club World Cup quarter-final match against Paris Saint-Germain. Musiala added that “situations like this happen”. The 22-year-old player suffered a fractured fibula with a broken and dislocated ankle after a collision with PSG goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma at the end of the first half. Musiala, who was stretchered off, returned from Atlanta to Munich where he underwent surgery. He is expected to be out for several months, missing the start of next season.

The surgery went very well, I am well cared for and I wanted to say that there is no one to blame for this. I think situations like this happen and now I am going to use the next period of time to regain my strength and positivity.

The PSG won the match 2-0, securing their place in the semi-finals against Real Madrid. Musiala’s injury is a hard blow for Bayern ahead of next season. Bayern’s sporting director, Max Eberl, stated: “This serious injury and the long absence are a real shock for Jamal and for all of us. Jamal has just returned from an injury and will now be out for another long period. He will receive everything he needs from us. We will support him intensely, we will be by his side and we are already looking forward to his return to the field.” Musiala finished the season with 21 goals and eight assists in all competitions, while Bayern won the Bundesliga title. The 22-year-old player is a rising star, having been chosen Player of the Year for the German national team in 2024. He was also a runner-up in 2023 for the Golden Boy award, given to the most promising under-21 talent in Europe. Musiala debuted for Bayern Munich in 2020 at the age of 17, becoming the youngest player on the team at the time of his debut. In 2022, he became the first teenager to play for Germany in a World Cup since 1958.
