After the final whistle at the Club World Cup, Thomas Müller said goodbye to the Bayern Munich fans. Thus concludes a quarter-century stage with the German club. The 35-year-old footballer bid farewell with a 2-0 defeat against Paris Saint-Germain in Saturday’s quarter-finals, a bittersweet end to a career full of successes. Müller came on as a substitute in the 80th minute and appeared to provoke a penalty in the final seconds of added time, when PSG’s Nuno Mendes made a harsh tackle in the area. However, the video review showed that Mendes’ foot impacted the ball, grazing Müller’s chin, sealing PSG’s victory.

I’m still completely focused on the work. I don’t feel much difference from before the match, when we tried, and I also tried, to get through another round.

He wasn’t ready to reflect on his brilliant career at Bayern, which began when he joined the club at the age of 10 in the summer of 2000.

In the end, maybe we deserved more. But in football, when you have these closely matched games, sometimes it’s a coin toss. And, yes, we lost it.

Müller is the player with the most appearances in Bayern’s history, with more than 200 goals and more than 200 assists. He led the club to a record 13 Bundesliga titles, saying goodbye with a final championship last season. However, Bayern announced in April that they would not extend his contract, which was very expensive, for another season.

Of course, I am aware that this was my last match, and I will see what goes through my head in the coming days.

He hasn’t revealed his future plans, although there has been speculation about a possible move to Major League Soccer in the United States.

At the moment, I’m not in the mood to share my deepest thoughts about my career. We lost a big battle, a very important match for us.
