Everton manager David Moyes expressed that his team’s performance did not deserve a point, but he did not think Leeds United should have been awarded the decisive penalty in the final match of the Premier League’s opening weekend. Moyes called the refereeing decision “poor” overall. Everton captain James Tarkowski appeared to lean into Leeds debutant Anton Stach’s deflected shot. Although his arms were by his sides, the ball struck his arm and referee Chris Kavanagh’s decision was confirmed by VAR. Substitute Lukas Nmecha beat Jordan Pickford from the penalty spot, giving Leeds a 1-0 victory at Elland Road in their first Premier League match back after promotion from the Championship last season.

Obviously, I’m going to say it’s not a penalty and I don’t think it is.

Moyes, visibly annoyed with the referee after the match, added that he thought the referees had had a poor weekend on the opening day. When asked about his team’s performance, Moyes added that they improved a bit in the second half, but he was not impressed by how they played.

Leeds manager Daniel Farke said he almost took the ball from Nmecha, but was glad he didn’t after the summer signing kept his nerve to score the penalty in the 84th minute.

I was a little worried. He’s on the list to take penalties, but as a substitute, he needed more touches and I was thinking about intervening and taking the ball away from him.

Nmecha, who fought with injuries in his last two seasons in the Bundesliga, has kept a low profile since becoming the first of Leeds’ eight summer signings so far. Farke praised Nmecha, highlighting his value with the crucial goal. Everton will play the first Premier League match at their new Bramley-Moore Dock stadium against Brighton on August 24, while Leeds will travel to face Arsenal the day before.
