Mexico Crowned Gold Cup Champion After Defeating United States

In an exciting match played at NRG Stadium in Houston, Mexico won their tenth Gold Cup title after defeating the United States with a score of 2-1. The match, which kept fans on the edge of their seats, was a display of the passion and rivalry that characterizes these two teams.

The match started with intensity, and it was the United States who opened the scoring in the 4th minute thanks to a brilliant header from Chris Richards. However, Mexico’s response was not long in coming, and Raúl Jiménez managed to tie the match before halftime with a precise finish.

After his goal, Jiménez paid tribute to Diogo Jota, his former teammate at Wolverhampton Wanderers, who tragically passed away along with his brother André Silva in a traffic accident.

In the second half, Edson Álvarez became the hero of the match by scoring the winning goal for Mexico with a header. Although the goal was initially disallowed for offside, after a video review, the goal was validated, unleashing euphoria among Mexican fans.

The United States coach, Mauricio Pochettino, fielded the same starting eleven that he had used in the victories against Costa Rica and Guatemala in the knockout rounds.

With this victory, Mexico adds its tenth Gold Cup title. The United States has won the Gold Cup seven times, and Canada once. This match was the eighth encounter between Mexico and the United States in a final.

The United States, which arrived at the Gold Cup with several important absences due to injuries, vacations, and the Club World Cup, achieved five victories against relatively weaker opponents and reached its first Gold Cup final since 2021. The match against Mexico, which is ranked number 17 in the ranking, was the last competitive match for both nations before they co-host next year’s World Cup along with Canada.

The USMNT arrived at the Gold Cup with a streak of four consecutive losses, the longest since 2007.
