The city was celebrating Liverpool’s 20th title, which equaled the record, when the driver turned onto a street full of fans and joy quickly turned to tragedy. The police said they believed Doyle evaded a roadblock by following an ambulance responding to a report of a person in cardiac arrest.

Eyewitness videos showed scenes of horror as the car hit and launched into the air a person wrapped in a Liverpool flag and then veered into a crowd of people gathered on the side of the road. Merseyside Police said the driver was believed to have acted alone and that they were not suspecting terrorism.

Superintendent Detective Rachel Wilson said:

An extensive investigation is underway into the precise circumstances of the incident, and we continue to ask that people do not speculate on the circumstances surrounding it and refrain from sharing distressing content online.
