Liverpool is close to finalizing a deal to sign center-back Giovanni Leoni from Parma, according to sources close to the club. The 18-year-old had aroused the interest of Inter Milan, but it seems he will move to Anfield for an initial fee of 26 million pounds ($35 million).

  • Sources: Liverpool initiates talks with Palace for Guéhi.
  • Premier League matches will hold a minute of silence for Jota.

If the agreement is finalized, Leoni would provide Liverpool with a crucial defensive reinforcement following Jarell Quansah’s departure to Bayer Leverkusen. He will join Virgil van Dijk, Ibrahima Konaté, and Joe Gomez as one of Arne Slot’s center-back options for next season, having played 17 Serie A matches with Parma last season.

Earlier this week, Liverpool also opened talks with Crystal Palace for English center-back Marc Guéhi. The South London club is expecting a fee of around £30 million ($41 million) plus £5 million ($7 million) in add-ons. A Guéhi has one year left on his contract with Palace and chairman Steve Parish admitted earlier this week that they might be forced to let him go this summer. Liverpool has also received a timely defensive boost ahead of Friday’s Premier League opener at home against Bournemouth with Gomez’s return to training. The 28-year-old player, the current longest-serving player at the club, returned home from the Asia tour early with an Achilles tendon injury and was subsequently sidelined for three weeks. But he was photographed with the rest of his teammates on Wednesday as preparations intensified for the defending champions’ season opener at Anfield.
