Lamine Yamal, out of the Spanish national team due to injury

In an unexpected turn of events, Lamine Yamal has been withdrawn from the Spanish national team due to a recurrence of his pubic problems, as confirmed by FC Barcelona. This situation will keep him off the field for an estimated period of two to three weeks. The young prospect, who was initially included in the list for the upcoming World Cup qualifying matches, will not be able to participate in the LaLiga match against Sevilla nor in Spain’s matches against Georgia and Bulgaria. The Catalan club issued a statement detailing Yamal’s situation: “The discomfort in the pubic area that player Lamine Yamal has been experiencing has recurred after the match against PSG. He will be out for the match against Sevilla, and the estimated time out is 2-3 weeks.” This injury comes after the forward played minutes in the match against Real Sociedad and played the full 90 minutes in the Champions League match against Paris Saint-Germain. The Spanish national team coach, Luis de la Fuente, had called up Yamal for the matches against Georgia and Bulgaria, but the injury has changed the plans. In addition to Yamal, Álvaro Morata, captain in previous call-ups, was one of the notable absences in De la Fuente’s list. Nico Williams, Dani Carvajal, Gavi, and Fermín López are also absent due to injury. Instead, Marcos Llorente, Pablo Barrios, Álex Baena, Yeremy Pino, and Samu Aghehowa have been called up. Yamal’s absence is a hard blow for Barcelona, who will now have to face a series of important matches, including the Clásico against Real Madrid, without one of their key figures. Barcelona’s sporting director, Deco, has stated that he has contacted his counterpart at the Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF), Aitor Karanka, to improve communication between the club and the national team. Spain leads its World Cup qualifying group and will seek to secure its presence in the competition.

Spain’s list of called-up players:

  • Goalkeepers: Unai Simón, David Raya, Álex Remiro
  • Defenders: Alejandro Grimaldo, Marc Cucurella, Pau Cubarsí, Dani Vivian, Robin Le Normand, Marcos Llorente, Pedro Porro, Dean Huijsen
  • Midfielders: Rodri, Dani Olmo, Mikel Merino, Martín Zubimendi, Aleix García, Pedri, Álex Baena, Pablo Barrios
  • Forwards: Mikel Oyarzabal, Ferran Torres, Yeremy Pino, Lamine Yamal, Samu Aghehowa, Jorge de Frutos, Jesús Rodriguez
