LAFC and Club América to Playoff for a Place in the Club World Cup

The expected rematch between LAFC and Club América to define the last team qualified for the group stage of the Club World Cup will take place on May 31 at BMO Stadium, home of LAFC.

The announcement was made by FIFA last Friday, thus confirming the venue for this crucial match.

This playoff is organized to determine the 32nd team of the tournament, after the exclusion of Club León due to a violation of the multiple club ownership rules. The Liga MX team saw its appeal rejected before the Court of Arbitration for Sport.

In March, FIFA determined that Club León and Pachuca did not comply with the regulations on multi-club ownership, although Pachuca’s participation in the tournament, which will be held from June 14 to July 13, was not affected.

LAFC, runner-up of the 2023 Concacaf Champions League, will face Club América, the highest-ranked team in the confederation’s ranking for the Club World Cup at the end of the 2024 Champions Cup.

The winner of this playoff will join Group D, which already includes Flamengo from Brazil, Esperance de Tunis from Tunisia, and Chelsea from the Premier League.
