Jordi Alba announces his retirement from football

Inter Miami defender Jordi Alba has confirmed his decision to retire from football at the end of the current Major League Soccer (MLS) season. The announcement comes after personal reflection, despite having renewed his contract with the club until 2027.

It’s true that I renewed my contract in May, but the conversations were much earlier, and well, maybe it’s true that the time in May, now October, hasn’t been long, but it’s a decision I’ve been mulling over, that I’ve been taking with time, and it’s been, well, three or four weeks since I told the team, the club.

Alba explained that the decision was made after considering several factors and that she feels physically well, but prefers to step aside at the right time. The player feels that it is time to step aside. The Spanish player, who arrived at Inter Miami in 2023, was part of the team that won the inaugural Leagues Cup in 2023, the Supporters’ Shield in 2024, and helped set a league record in a single season.

Coach Javier Mascherano admitted that Alba’s decision will be difficult for the club, although it was not a surprise. He highlighted that the player is in good physical shape, but respects his personal decision.

They are decisions; everyone lives them in their own way. The important thing, I repeat, is that they do it in a very natural way.

Before arriving in Miami, Alba also won six LaLiga titles and a Champions League, among other achievements, during her 11 years at Barcelona. Alba’s career, at 16 years old, will come to an end at the end of the 2025 MLS season, as Inter Miami prepares for the playoffs.
