Jaedyn Shaw Joins Gotham FC in a Record Transfer

The North Carolina Courage has finalized an agreement to transfer American midfielder Jaedyn Shaw to NJ/NY Gotham FC for a sum of $1.25 million. This figure would set a new record within the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) for a transfer between teams in the league.

This amount far exceeds the previous record, which was set in August, when the Kansas City Current paid $600,000 to the Utah Royals for the US national team forward Ally Sentnor. In addition, it is positioned as one of the most expensive transfers worldwide.

The payment of 1.25 million dollars will be made in several installments and will be fully covered with internal transfer funds from the NWSL, according to a league source.

Gotham FC, looking to bolster its squad with a creative player, plans to sign Shaw through the 2029 NWSL season.

Shaw’s departure from Courage marks the end of his time on the team after less than a full season.

The 20-year-old player was transferred from San Diego Wave FC to North Carolina in January, a move she requested in search of a change of scenery. As part of that agreement, the Courage sent $300,000 in allocation money, an international spot for the 2025 and 2026 NWSL seasons, and $150,000 in internal transfer fees to San Diego.

During her time in San Diego, Shaw won the NWSL Shield and the NWSL Challenge Cup, and was included in the NWSL Best XI in 2023.

Shaw will join a Gotham team that currently sits sixth in the standings, with seven games remaining in the NWSL regular season before the postseason.

North Carolina is in 11th place, but only four points away from eighth place and the last playoff spot. The Courage fired Sean Nahas as coach in early August. Shaw, who in April expressed that he was finding it difficult to meet the high expectations since joining the Courage, has started in 10 NWSL matches this season, accumulating three goals and one assist.

In addition, Shaw has scored eight goals in 26 appearances for the United States national team and was awarded the Golden Ball as the best player of the tournament at the 2024 Women’s Gold Cup, where the United States took first place.
