Inter Miami Secures Its Place in the 2025 Leagues Cup Playoffs
Inter Miami CF achieved an important victory against Pumas UNAM in their last group stage match of the Leagues Cup 2025, guaranteeing their spot in the knockout round of the tournament. The match was played on Wednesday night at Chase Stadium.
Despite Pumas taking the lead, goals from Luis Suárez, Rodrigo De Paul, and Tadeo Allende secured the victory for Inter Miami.
Lionel Messi, the team captain, celebrated each goal from the bench, as he was unable to participate in the match due to a hamstring injury suffered against Necaxa on August 2nd.
The club finished the initial phase of the tournament with eight points, after defeating Atlas and Pumas in regulation time and drawing against Necaxa, obtaining an additional point by winning a penalty shootout 5-4.
The Leagues Cup format involves clubs competing for points during the group stage to establish a ranking in the specific tables of each league. The four highest-ranked teams from Liga MX and MLS advance to the knockout phase.
The team led by Javier Mascherano needed the victory to secure their place in the quarter-finals. In the absence of Messi, Suárez demonstrated his class with a penalty goal and a brilliant assist for Allende’s goal.
With this defeat, Pumas was eliminated from the competition.
Inter Miami won the inaugural edition of the Leagues Cup in 2023, but was eliminated in the round of 16 in 2024 against Columbus Crew.
